The methodology to assess industrial waste heat sources is based on a top-down approach. As no observation data for waste heat and heating demand is available this data has to be derived from proxy data for estimating waste heat potential.

Based on a comprehensive literature review on employee-specific energy characteristics for different industries (energy consumption per employee, process heat consumption per employee or electricity consumption per employee) the per capita energy / heat consumption for relevant industry sectors has been extracted. Based on these values, the energy consumption and the waste heat potential has been estimated. The temperature for the respective sector and work site has then been assigned (literature review).

MEMPHIS is based on a previous project named “Heat_re_Use.Vienna” (http://www.smartcities.at/stadt-projekte/smart-cities/heat-re-use/ ), where AIT developed assessed the waste heat potential for the city of Vienna. The target in MEMPHIS is to generalize, extend and refine the methodology for international application.

In the next section the relevant sectors for waste heat usage are described in detail.
